Lala's (Shannon's mother's paternal grandmother) Eggnog
Ingredients:
serves 6 - 8 (probably more)
6 eggs, separated
6 - 7 tablespoons (or more to taste) sugar
2 cups heavy whipping cream
3 shots (or more to taste) Bourbon**or use brandy or rum (+ 2 tbs of Ohelo Berry vinegar to give it a Sour Flower flare!)
Instructions:
Separate eggs. Whisk egg yolks with 4 tablespoons of sugar and Bourbon.
Whip egg whites with 2 tablespoons sugar until pretty stiff.
Place about 1 spoonful of beaten whites in the yolk mixture and whisk to lighten.
Then FOLD the remaining whites into the lightened yolk mixture.
Whip cream separately with 1 tablespoon of sugar.
Gently fold the whipped cream into the egg mixture.
To serve, grate fresh nutmeg over top. (and sprinkle Ohelo berries on top!)
This makes a lightly sweet egg nog and is not very alcoholic. Adjust sweetness and Bourbon to taste. Note that additional sugar needs to be added when whisking or beating eggs so that it dissolves, but the extra whiskey can be added at the end. My grandmother's family (Billy's mom, her name was Olivia but we called her LaLa) was originally from New Orleans - or at least her mother was but my great grandfather was from Mississippi. I'm not sure if the origins of the recipe are New Orleans based, Mississippi based, or if the recipe was brought from England.
Love, mom.
